CSA Donation Program
How does the donation program work?
Taylor’s Fresh Organics will be selling crop shares through our CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) program that will be donated to the Food Bank of the share holders choosing. We are currently working with the Maryland Food Bank, and the Food Bank of Delaware. Companies, families, or individuals will purchase shares in our CSA, making them a shareholders for that season’s crops. Each shareholder can expect to receive a box of vegetables every week for a 20-week span that will be donated to the Food Bank of their choosing. The shareholder’s donation will also be made 100% tax deductible by the Food Bank. The box of vegetables will contain enough vegetables to feed a family of four for one week. There will be a weekly newsletter that will update the shareholders on the progress of the farm and contain recipes, food facts, and other informational material. The newsletter will be emailed to the shareholders each week. Each shareholder is invited to the farm during the growing season to see how things are going and to learn more about organic farming methods. In addition to the CSA share donation we will be donating any produce that is deemed unmarketable but perfectly good to eat which usually runs at 20-30% of our volume rather than leaving it in the field. In 2011 we sent over 50,000 lbs. to the Maryland Food Bank with the help of the Maryland Department of Corrections.
How will you and your community benefit from joining Our CSA?
One benefit is that you will be supporting local, sustainable agriculture. This will help to create jobs locally and boost sales for other local companies through the purchase of equipment, supplies, and crop inputs for the farm. In our currently tough economy, this is a great benefit for our community. You will also be helping to preserve our precious environment by supporting organic farming practices. The best benefit of all is knowing that you will be helping to feed the less fortunate with a weekly supply of fresh organic vegetables during a time period when donations are down.
How will the Food Banks benefit?
The great part about this program is the Food Bank will have the ability to get the produce they need at the time they need it. We will grow the crops that the Food Bank requests for the donations they will receive through our 2011 Summer CSA Donation Program at the time they want to receive them. This way the Food Bank receives the vegetables that are most valuable to them during the times they are most needed. This will help the Food Bank to better support their programs. The Food Bank will be able to provide healthier foods to low-income families that would otherwise be unable to afford fresh vegetables for them and their children. No man, woman, or child in our country today should go hungry, and they should be able to benefit from fresh, healthy produce as most of us do.
